I attended Jewels’ Concert in San Diego where she performed her hits, Christmas music and gave canned stories of her adventures on the road and living out of her car. It was like being in some ones living room as we all watched 8mm film her Dad took when Jewel was a little girl Homesteading in Alaska. There was a yodel contest between Dad and Jewel, hard to tell who won, delightful!
What took my breath away was Jewels awesome arrangement of Ava Maria, the high notes that she hit perfectly, made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. She wore a white dress with flaring sleeves and when she raised her hands, it made her look like an angel singing to us from heaven. It was moving and a beautiful moment.
After the performance, I handed her dad a Giclee’ of Jewel, taken from the mural, along with a note requesting an interview the next time she is in town. Jewel is not only an iconic singer with a San Diego connection, but a remarkable story teller as well.
